I powered up my tablet when I returned to my rooms, and Director Mehta’s profile soon appeared. She was in her office, and I saw lights moving in the window behind her, across the glittering city. They seemed thousands of miles and many years distant from my dreary coast. She’d all but packed up for the day, but sat down again at her desk, unwound her scarf, and pulled off her gloves as I told her what I’d learned in my hours with Caro Drucker. She was quiet while I spoke, and quiet for a while afterwards.

“Well,” she said eventually, “Dr. Stans was nothing if not industrious.” I nodded. “And, like all good spies, she needed but little sleep. You’ll send along the documents?” I nodded. “They’ll be useful, though likely they represent just the tip of the iceberg.”

“Agreed,” I said.

“Your friend from the garage would provide a shorter path, I think.”

“Yes, direct to a buyer, or buyers.”

“Or even more direct to thieves who fell out.”

“I’m certain he had no idea that Allegra was dead.”

“No, but this fellow might not have been her only coconspirator. And he may know of others. I’ll make sure those keys and the camera get Dr. Wilding’s attention.”

“Thank you.”

“And, for now, we’ll keep news of this leak in the family, yes?” I nodded. “And your Ms. Drucker will observe that?”

“She will, though she’s worried about her job.”

“As well she should be—she and any number of other people out there.”
